Sony Xperia fans could be treated to this gorgeous new smartphone next month

Sony is fighting to resuscitate its Xperia smartphone brand. Last year the firm released the Xperia 1 and Xperia 5, both of which adopted new 21:9 aspect ratios and rectangular designs that made them easier to hold and use with one hand. Now it seems the Tokyo tech giant could be readying a new Xperia in an effort to woo Android fans. Renowned tipster OnLeaks recently shared alleged renders of what he claims is the Sony Xperia 5 Plus. The device was shown to retain the rectangular form factor of the Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 but exterminate its bezels to deliver a greater screen-to-body ratio to bring it more up to date with its contemporaries.

The Xperia 5 Plus was exhibited with a small bezel above its estimated 6.6-inch OLED display housing a single front-facing camera and an earpiece. It’s currently unclear if the device will house any advanced facial scanners for 3D unlocking. The phone is expected to tote dual front-firing speakers, though.

Flipping the phone over was shown to reveal a very familiar design to the Xperia 5 with a Sony logo embossed in the middle and a vertically stacked camera module on the left-hand side.

OnLeaks’ renders revealed the Xperia 5 Plus with a grand total of four cameras on its rear. While the exact function of each lens is unclear, it’s presumed the handset will follow in the footsteps of the Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 by offering a primary, telephoto and ultra wide-angle lens. The tipster also speculated the device could come with an additional time-of-flight (ToF) module for added depth awareness.

The images also seem to confirm the Xperia 5 Plus will come with a physical fingerprint reader on its side, just like its flagship brothers released last year. That seems to confirm the handset won’t come with either an optical or ultra-sonic reader underneath its display.

Interestingly, it seems the Xperia 5 Plus will come with a headphone jack. If true, it would certainly make the Android handset one of the few left on the market to come with the age-old port.

OnLeaks didn’t discuss the specifications of the alleged Sony smartphone. However it’s presumed the device will come with one of the newest chip offerings from Qualcomm – the Snapdragon 765G or 865 perhaps?

Sony is also expected to offer Android fans a generous amount of RAM and deliver Android 10 out the box.

The latest set of renders from OnLeaks is certainly timely – Sony has a history of unveiling new smartphones at MWC in February (the firm showed off the Xperia 1 in Barcelona last year), so it’s possible we could see this new Xperia unwrapped in full in a matter of weeks.

Of course, nothing about an Xperia 5 Plus has been officially confirmed by Sony. Express.co.uk will be attending the firm’s scheduled showcase at MWC next month though, so stay tuned for all the Japanese firm’s announcements.
