Shark horror: Woman left in shock after witnessing husband get mauled to death by monster

The Australian diver is yet to be found more than 24 hours after he was violently attacked by a Great white shark on Sunday. Gary Johnson was reportedly attacked by the beast while diving near Cull Island off Esperance on the south coast of Western Australia.

Mr Johnson was an experienced diver and president of a local diving club.

Mr Johnson’s wife, Karen Milligan, watched the attack unfold and was taken to hospital to be treated for shock after the tragic event, according to CNN.

The horrific attack took place just hours after a reported shark sighting in the area.

Mrs Milligan said in a statement: “Gary was my rock.

“He was a kind, gentle, strong man. He only ever saw the best in people.

He will be so truly missed by me, by his family and his friends and the world will be a poorer place without this most beautiful man.”

Police said in a statement that Mr Johnson was in the same area but on a boat at the time of the attack.

They said: “Preliminary information suggests the victim of the shark attack was in the area on a boat.

Mrs Milligan added: “He and I were at home in and on the ocean.

“We would go out diving in our boat whenever we could, most weekends. We took photos, not fish.

“We were always aware of the risks, and often told each other that if we were attacked by a shark, that would just be unlucky.

“We were completely against shark culling, and I still am.”

Great white sharks have been responsible for approximately 40 percent of attacks off the coast of Western Australia since 1980.

The deadly species causes more serious and fatal bites than any other shark, according to Sharksmart.

Mrs Milligan also said her and her husband believed that if fish stocks were “better protected” then the risk of sharks to people in the waters would be reduced.

Esperance is located around 720 kilometres (447 miles) southeast of the capital of Perth.

The area has become a popular area for diving.

The unfortunate incident marks the second fatal attack in the area in the past three years.

There were also two non-fatal shark bite incidents off Western Australia in 2019, according to a spokesperson for the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.
