Man City player ratings vs Man Utd: Fernandinho and Silva star – Sterling struggles up top

Manchester City had Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez and an own goal from Andress Pereira to thank as they moved one step closer to again retaining their Carabao Cup trophy. Pep Guardiola’s side were blistering in the first-half at Old Trafford and Marcus Rashford’s second-half strike proved to be a mere consolation for Manchester United in a 2-1 City win.

Silva got City’s noses in front in the 17th minute as he drifted in from the right wing before unleashing a blistering strike beyond the despairing grasp of David De Gea.

Scorer then turned provider as Silva’s through-ball found Mahrez and the Algerian rounded De Gea to double City’s lead at the home of their old rivals.

Pereira’s own goal meant Rashford’s well-taken 70th-minute effort counted for little as City set their sights on March’s Carabao Cup final.

Excellent pushing forward assisting Silva goal and setting up Sterling first half.

Some typically muscular challenges and helped shut out threat of Daniel James well.

Three brilliant early interventions to snuff out Rashford threat early. Never out of position.

Left the spectacular to others but barely put a foot wrong in the middle aside from being booked.

Loose pass led to United’s goal. The only blemish on a superb display.

Took his goal well and gave Brandon Wiliams a hard time on the right as the game progressed.

Handed left wing role but spurned at least two golden opportunities in front of goal.

Showed his versatility in false nine role with brilliant display and unstoppable shot for opener.
