Iran stampede: 35 dead and dozens injured after huge crush at Qassem Soleimani funeral

Chaos ensued at the funeral of the Iranian general after thousands flocked to his home town of Kerman, where he is due to be buried later.   

Iranian state TV claimed a stampede had broken out and left 35 people dead and 48 injured.

Waves of mourners rushed to the town in south-eastern Iran to catch a glimpse of General Soleimani’s coffin. 

The death of the genral from a US drone strike sparked huge outpourings of grief in the Middle Eastern country.

 

More than one million people turned out in the streets of Tehran yesterday to honour General Soleimani.

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was seen publicaly weeping over Soleimani’s casket yesterday.

He has ordered his country’s forces to retaliate directly against US interests rather than relying on its proxies in the region.

The country renewed its vows of vengeance against the US today, which regarded the general as a terrorist leader.

Tehran claimed it has lined up 13 “revenge scenarios” and revolutionary guards leader Hossein Salami told the crowds today that Iran would ‘set ablaze’ US allies.

The crowd erupted in chants of “America is the great Satan”.
