Australia fires from space: Harrowing NASA pictures reveal ash on New Zealand glaciers

The satellite snapshots cover a five-year timeframe between December 15, 2014, and November 11, 2019.

NASA’s images proved a clear view of how much soil and soot from the fires has settled on the Southern Alps mountain range in South Island, New Zealand.

NASA said: “Austral summer is a popular time for hikers to tramp across the stunning New Zealand backcountry.

“But this year in the mountains of South Island, there are hints of events unfolding 2,000 kilometres away.

“Carried by the wind, dust and ash particles from Australia have painted some glaciers in New Zealand with a brown-orange tint.”
