George Lazenby: James Bond star blasted for saying ‘squeaky-voiced women have taken over’

George Lazenby has said modern men “have no balls” and claimed it is females that now dominate the world of television and film. The James Bond actor criticised some women for their “bl**dy squeaky voices”, saying his mother used have to get “permission to speak”.

The 80-year-old’s new interview with the Daily Mail sparked a response from Athena Stevens of the Women’s Equality Party.

The 007 star has said it is no longer a man’s world, after playing the secret agent in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service back in 1969.

“You just have to look at the newscasts,” George started. “75 per cent of the people are women and before it was 10 per cent, so women have taken over.

“I don’t say that as a bad thing, but it’s different. And they’ve got bl**dy squeaky voices.”

George went on: “I had to sell my car to give her the money for an abortion. I was 22 at the time and thought that was the end of it.”

The star has walked down the aisle twice, the first time to Chrissie Townsend, a member of the Gannett family.

The former couple had two children: Zachary, who died age 19 of a brain tumour, and Melanie.

He went on to marry tennis player Pam Shriver, now 57, following his divorce in 1995, but their marriage came to an end after six years.

The couple have three children, including twins born in 2005.

Meanwhile, George spoke to the Radio Times last month about who will play James Bond when Daniel Craig departs.

“Age is just a number,” he said. “To play Bond the main thing you need is attitude and swagger and you need to be believable as a deadly killer.

“Taron Egerton was only 25 – and looked 18 – when he made the first Kingsman film which obviously was inspired by 007. I recall many people couldn’t accept the idea of Daniel Craig as a blonde Bond, but that evaporated when they saw him in action.”
