Donald Trump humiliated in radio clip as he confuses Iran’s 'Quds Force' with ‘Kurds’

On Friday Qasem Soleimani, head of the Quds Force, was killed by a US drone strike. He had previously been one of the most powerful figures in Iran and had close connections with militia and terrorist groups across the Middle East.

However during a 2015 radio interview Trump didn’t appear to know who Soleimani was and confused the Quds Force with the Kurdish ethnic group.

The interview, which took place when Trump was running for the presidency, took place with Hugh Hewitt.

Asked if he knew who General Soleimani was Trump replied: “Yes, I go ahead, give me a little, go ahead, tell me.”

Mr Hewitt explained: “He runs the Quds Force.”

In response Trump replied: “And I think the Kurds, by the way, have been horribly mistreated by us.”

The Kurds are an ethnic group spread between Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria.

Last year Trump withdrew American troops from north-east Syria that had been helping the Kurdish YPG militia fight ISIS.

In response Turkey invaded territory controlled by the YPG, leading Kurdish leaders to invite Syrian government troops to re-occupy the area.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard is an elite force that supports the country’s regime against internal and external enemies.

The Quds Force is a unit of the Revolutionary Guard that specialises in intelligence and unconventional warfare.

Donald Trump has said the US killing of Iran’s top military chief General Qassem Soleimani “should have been done a long time ago”.

The US president commented: “We took action last night to stop a war. We did not take action to start a war.”

Mr Trump said the US was not seeking regime change in Iran, but claimed the world was a safer place without “monsters” such as General Soleimani.

He asserted: “If Americans anywhere are threatened we have all of those targets fully identified and I am ready and prepared to take whatever action is necessary, and that particularly refers to Iran.”

Mr Trump said the Iranian general was plotting “imminent and sinister attacks” and added: “We caught him in the act and terminated him.”

However, despite the President’s insistence that his actions were done to stop a war, fears of a global conflict have exploded.

US citizens in Iraq have been told to leave the country immediately in the wake of the air strike.

The attack dramatically increases already heightened tensions in the region, with religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warning of “severe revenge”.
