Nintendo Direct January 2020: Surprise announcement proof new Direct IS coming soon?

Nintendo Direct January 2020 is a hot topic for Nintendo Switch gamers right now, with fans left wondering if some big announcements are in the works. The last time the House of Mario held a proper Nintendo Direct was back in September, a few months after their blockbuster E3 2019 showing. The last major Nintendo Direct officially unveiled Animal Crossing New Horizons as well as announcing Overwatch Switch and a Smash Bros DLC fighter.

Since then Ninty have held other streams, but none have been as comprehensive and wide-ranging as a proper Nintendo Direct broadcast.

But that could all be about to change in January with Switch fans widely expecting a new Nintendo Direct to take place.

There are a number of reasons why Switch gamers are expecting a Nintendo Direct January 2020 broadcast.

Firstly, in December Nintendo held an Indie World stream – and typically when this happens a Direct follows a month later.

And secondly Nintendo is running out of time to announce the Fighters Pass 5 character for Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

This is typically announced during a Nintendo Direct, and Ninty will have to act fast to reveal the Smash DLC before its release date in February.

As such, a Nintendo Direct in January would make perfect sense.

It would give Nintendo enough time to announce who will be the Smash Bros Fighters Pass 5 character and then build anticipation ahead of its release.

And Switch gamers could have received proof that there is indeed a January 2020 Nintendo Direct planned.

One of the games that previously was revealed in a Nintendo Direct was the latest title in Atlus’s popular Shin Megami Tensei series.

In fact, SMTV was first announced almost three years ago in the Nintendo stream that unveiled the Switch.

A trailer later followed in November 2017 but since then JRPG fans haven’t heard a peep from the Persona makers about the new Shin Megami Tensei game.

But this all looks like it’s about to change soon.

As revealed in a post on the Persona Central Twitter, the official Japanese SMT Twitter has given fans an update on the highly anticipated Switch game.

And the account tweeted: “Please look forward to follow-up news on Shin Megami Tensei V!”

The tweet doesn’t mention when news on Shin Megami Tensei V will be arriving, but an upcoming Direct would surely be the best place to reveal more.

It would be the ideal place to announce more on the big Switch JRPG and to as huge an audience as possible around the world.

And, seeing as Shin Megami Tensei V has appeared in Directs before, it stands to reason that it could appear in a future one.

So, maybe Atlus are teasing fans right now about a big update on SMTV ahead of the game getting showcased in the next Direct?

Atlus also recently teased Famitsu that news on Shin Megami Tensei V was inbound.

They told the iconic Japanese gaming magazine: “We’re currently hard at work developing Shin Megami Tensei V and Project Re Fantasy.”

The Switch has been a huge success for Nintendo so far, and a lot of that is surely down to its impressive selection of exclusive titles.

But as we approach 2020 the slate of confirmed exclusives launching next year on the Switch is looking quite bare.

We know Animal Crossing New Horizons and the Xenoblade Chronicles remake is coming in the next 12 months.

But apart from that 2020’s release schedule for the Switch is looking a bit on the light side.

Given this, it would make sense for Ninty to hold a Direct at the start of 2020 – possibly revealing some surprise projects for fans to look forward to.

This would be especially important considering the impending release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles which will give the Switch stiff competition.
