Call of Duty Modern Warfare update: PS4 and Xbox COD downloads end 2019 on high

Call of Duty Modern Warfare has seen a big update to its end of year stats, showing the game to be one of the most popular of 2019.

According to the Association for UK Interactive Entertainment, the latest COD game is ending the year at the top of the charts in the UK.

The UK is a massive market for video games and Call of Duty is one of a number of titles that are seen dominating its summit.

But the release of Modern Warfare appears to have topped previous titles in a lot of ways, with interest appearing to be higher among gamers.

And the sales charts we are talking about includes all formats, meaning games available on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

The Top 40 Entertainment Software Charts for Week 52 – Ending 28th December – shows Modern Warfare at the top yet again.

According to UKIE, there was a close battle between Call of Duty Modern Warfare and FIFA 20, which finished the year in second place.

This was followed by Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order and a few others that may surprise fans.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe finished third, which is pretty impressive for a game that launched back in 2017.

And it wasn’t the only older title making waves, with GTA 5 yet again proving popular with gamers in sixth place.

That ups from 11th, with the top five games all keeping their places from previous chart records.

This follows on from Call of Duty Modern Warfare managing to score the top spot during Chrismas 2019, another impressive record for the franchise.

While the charts don’t provide full answers on what platforms have proven the most popular, we know that Modern Warfare isn’t available to buy on Nintendo Switch.

PS4 and Xbox One are the platforms that provide the most COD downloads, with recent PlayStation Store data backing that up.

A recent message from Sony confirms: “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was the most downloaded PS4 game in November, marking the second month in a row that Infinity Ward’s shooter has taken the top spot.

“EA games snagged the next three slots, with FIFA 20 remaining at second place, while new releases Need for Speed Heat and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order snagging third and fourth respectively. Kojima Productions’ sci-fi epic Death Stranding placed fifth.”

And it wouldn’t be surprising to learn that Call of Duty has a bright 2020 ahead of it, thanks to its new free content scheme.

Using a Battle Pass system similar to Fornite, Activision has chosen to release free updates through seasonal expansions.

Season 1 is scheduled to run until late January and will be followed by another major COD update.

And rumours suggest we might see a big new mode go live with the launch of Season 2. Gamers believe they may have found a new Battle Royale map hidden in the game, while data miners suggest something similar.

The difference with this new BR mode would be that it would support up to 200 players, a massive expansion from Black Ops 4.

And if these rumours prove true, fans will want to keep an eye out for the latest news regarding what’s coming next to Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2020.
