World War 2 fury: Polish PM accuses Putin and Russia of deliberate lies on horror conflict

Mr Putin has said on numerous occasions that Poland must bear the responsibility for the outbreak of WWII, raising tensions between the two countries. On Friday the Russian ambassador to Poland was summoned to the Polish foreign ministry in protest. World War II started when Poland was invaded by Nazi Germany and then the Soviet Union two weeks later.

Both countries agreed a secret pact to divvy Poland up between them.

Speaking in a statement Mr Morawiecki said: “President Putin has lied about Poland on numerous occasions, and he has always done it deliberately,

“It usually happens in a situation when the authorities in Moscow feel international pressure caused by its actions. And this pressure is not on the historical stage but on the modern geopolitical scene”

The Polish PM noted the recent extension of the EU sanctions imposed following Moscow’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula in 2014. In addition, Russia faces new sanctions from the United States over its planned Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which Poland and the Baltic states also oppose, fearing it will be used to apply political pressure.

“I consider the words of President Putin as an attempt to conceal these problems,” Mr Morawiecki said.

The Russian leader has recently lashed out at the EU’s official conclusion that Russia was equally responsible for WWII alongside Germany.

Mr Putin called that conclusion “sheer nonsense”.

His argument is that collusion between the Western states and Hitler laid the foundations for World War Two.

The news isn’t the first time Mr Putin disputed WWII history as in an end of year press conference in 2017, he was asked whether Russia would step in to help with US-North Korea missile talks, as Washington tried to negotiate for denuclearisation in Pyongyang.

While making a scathing assessment on President Trump’s efforts in talks, Mr Putin also lambasted the US for the 1945 strikes on Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

He said: “The United States has already used nuclear weapons against Japan. I do not believe it was justified.

“Now there is absolutely no need for this. It is important to be very careful.”

The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki occured on the August 6 and August 9, 1945, and preceded Japan’s surrender on August 15.

The devastating strikes killed between 129,000 and 226,000 people overall, most of whom were civilians.

The surrender by Japan effectively ended World War 2, and the use of the two nuclear bombs remain the only uses of such weapons in armed conflict.

However, Mr Putin spent most of him time addressing the issue of North Korea, appearing to hint that he saw the US as hypocritical in its handling of the negotiations with Kim Jong-un.
