This Is Us left fans with a lot of questions after their Season 4 winter finale aired last month. And, one of the biggest question marks surround the relationship of Toby (Chris Sullivan) and Kate (Chrissy Metz), after the couple started to drift apart when Kate gave birth to their son Jack, and Toby started losing weight when he joined his local CrossFit gym.
At the end of the most recent episode “So Long, Marianne” – which feels like it aired a decade ago (it was really November 19th) – Kate accidentally saw a text message on Toby’s phone that indicated he had been dishing on his troubles with Kate to his CrossFit buddies instead of talking to her. And, to make matters worse, Toby appeared to be talking to a female.

“Don’t let her bring you down. Here for you,” the message read.
There really is no question that Toby is in love with Kate, but what has fans concerned is that the couple seems to be going down different roads. Toby is going through a major lifestyle transformation now that he’s found CrossFit, while Kate continues her struggles with weight while being the mom of a child with special needs.
Toby seems to be putting his focus and energy on his weight loss while ignoring his relationship with Kate. And, their problems with intimacy have already been highlighted, as can often be the case with first-time parents. But, it doesn’t look like the couple is dealing with their problems together, and Toby and Kate appear to be drifting apart.
Kate confessed to Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) that she can’t stand CrossFit Toby, and Toby was mad that Kate lied about Jack’s first bite of solid food. But, Kate can’t bring herself to be honest with Toby about her feelings.
In a new photo that NBC released from the upcoming episode “Light & Shadows,” it appears that Toby and Kate are having a serious heart-to-heart about the status of their relationship, while a packed suitcase sits on the floor next to them.
Does this conversation have to do with the text message that Kate saw on Toby’s phone? Is he pleading with her to give him another chance? Or, is he telling her that he needs time away?
It’s not clear at what point in the Pearson family timeline that this conversation takes place. However, there have been flash-forwards in previous episodes that indicate the future is not bright for the couple.

Season 4 of This Is Us picks back up with new episodes on NBC starting January 14th.
