Typhoon tracker: HORROR storms intensifying across the globe – latest maps and models

The death toll from Typhoon Phanfone has hit 16, as residents in the Philippines are left reeling from the devastating storm. Now, holidaymakers and residents on the island of Fiji are on high alert as Tropical Cyclone Sarai closes in.

Here is all the latest on the active storm systems:

Typhoon Phanfone

While Phanfone has moved off the Philippines now, this doesn’t mean it’s no longer a threat.

The storm is expected to bring some impacts to the east coast of Vietnam before it completely dissipates.

The storm is still packing maximum wind gusts of 60 knots (70mph/112kmh).

While the typhoon continues its path over the South China Sea, the Philippines continue trying to pick up the pieces.

Gusts of up to 118mph (190kmh) struck, destroying homes and power lines, and flooding is severe in some provinces.

Scores of people are missing after thousands were left stranded as they tried to make their way home for Christmas.

Access to some islands off the coast has been hampered by the suspension of shipping by the coastguard.

More than 58,000 people had been evacuated in advance and about 15,000 others were stranded at ports when ferry services were suspended.

Most deaths occurred in Iloilo and Capiz provinces.

Water and power services were cut in many areas, he added, and restoring them could take weeks.

The popular tourist island of Boracay appears to have suffered damage, although the extent is unclear.

Tropical Cyclone Sarai

Tropical Cyclone Sarai is barrelling across the South Pacific, leaving Fiji vulnerable.

Sarai is packing maximum wind gusts of 55 knots (64mph/103kmh), but this is expected to rise.

The incoming storm has left holidaymakers travelling to and from Fiji stranded as it brings fears of flash floods.

Airlines such as Fiji Airways have cancelled flights to the island from Sydney, Brisbane, Los Angeles and Auckland, among others.

Air New Zealand’s website said they were “closely monitoring the Tropical Cyclone approaching Fiji”.

The website added: “Based on current forecasting, we are anticipating disruption to our flights to and from Nadi, Fiji.”

The Fiji Meteorological Service warned of “damaging gale force winds” and heavy rain with coastal flooding expected in many areas as the cyclone intensified.

The storm is expected to be a Category Two storm by the time it hits the main island of Viti Levu early on Saturday.

The Fiji Disaster Management Office has activated its emergency shelters and issued a public advisory for people to have their “disaster kits” ready.

Tropical Disturbance 96S

A less severe but equally threatening system, being called Tropical Disturbance 96S as head not been named, is brewing in the Indian Ocean.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Centre gives it a “medium” chance of becoming a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours.

96S is currently building off the northeast coast of Madagascar.
