Why do we pull Christmas crackers?

Tom Smith, a London-based sweet manufacturer, is credited with the invention of the Christmas cracker.

Inspired by the French bonbon – a sugared almond sweet wrapped in paper – Mr Smith tried to replicate their success when he returned from a trip to Paris in 1840.

He came up with the idea of including a motto or riddle inside the packaging to entertain people once they opened their sweet.

But this was tactic did not result in commercial success and sales of Mr Smith’s treat were falling.
