Christmas turkey 2019: Why do we eat turkey for Christmas dinner?

The meat does form part of festive meals in the USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, as well as many countries in central and south America.

But closer to home in Europe, it is nowhere near as common.

In Germany, for example, the preferred choice is either venison or wild boar.

In Portugal, a seafood crazy country, locals opt for codfish for Christmas while in Sweden – another nation with an affinity for fish – shellfish, caviar, and cooked and raw fish are all on the festive feast menu.
