“But of course, we don’t get to spend it with our families. At the same time, our thoughts go to all those who are deployed to dangerous and critical areas, and are doing service, and they also cannot spend their time with family and friends.
“We are thinking about you during our time up here in orbit.”
Dr Meir then took the microphone, to talk about celebrating both Hanukkah and Christmas.
On December 22, the astronaut wished everyone on Earth a “happy Hanukkah”.
The astronaut said: “As a child growing up, I was fortunate enough to celebrate two different holidays all through the holiday season – both Christmas and Hanukkah.
“So whatever it is you’re celebrating this holiday season, we hope that you find peace and love, and enjoy spending time with all those around you that are important.
