Ricky Gervais is now under hot water just ahead of his host gig for the Golden Globes on January 5. People are really upset with him over tweets in which he was making transphobic jokes.
This all started with J.K. Rowling’s own controversial post in which she showed support to Maya Forstater, a woman who lost her job for stating that biological sex cannot be changed.
This is where Gervais comes in! The star took to the platform to jokingly rant about the scandal from the perspective of a fictitious transgender woman angry at the Harry Potter author for agreeing with Forstater.
‘Speaking as a trans woman, the thought that I will no longer be welcome in a fictional school for wizards has destroyed me. What does a cis woman like Rowling know about being a woman in any case? Those awful biological women can’t ever understand what it’s like for you becoming a lovely lady so late in life. They take their girl privileges for granted. Winning at female sports as well as having their own toilets. Well, enough is enough,’ he mockingly wrote in his satirical piece.
When one user reminded the man that ‘kindness is magic’ he only doubled down on his opinion, arguing that: ‘Exactly. We need to protect women’s rights. Not erode them because some men have found a cunning new way to dominate and demonize an entire sex.’
Gervais soon noticed the criticism and addressed his posts, arguing that it was just a joke.
Still, people slammed him anyway, arguing that his words can still do a lot of harm to the transgender community’s members.
Another user asked him to clarify what his actual stance is since if it was all a joke, it fell flat.

Instead of complying with the request, Gervais used a self-deprecating joke, saying that ‘that’s why it’s free.’
