Trump is currently facing impeachment proceedings.

The House of Representatives approved two articles of impeachment, one on abuse of power which won 230-197 and another on obstruction of Congress which won 229-198.

The proceedings came after allegations that Trump pressured Ukraine to announce it would investigate the son of Joe Biden, a potential appointment in next year’s Presidential election and withheld military aid and a White House invitation to Kiev.

There are also allegations Trump told administration officials to ignore subpoenas for documents and testimony.

The President now faces a trail in the Senate, and in order to achieve a conviction two-thirds of the upper house (67 senators) must vote in favour to impeach Trump and remove him from office.

The Republican Party holds 53 of the 100 seats with 45 held by Democrats and 2 held by Independents.

A Gallup poll released on the day of Trump’s impeachment found that Trump’s approval rating had increased by six points during the process.

Trump is currently seeking the Republican nomination to stand for re-election in November 2020.

Former Illinois congressman Joe Walsh and former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld are his opponents.
