Star Wars 9 C-3PO legend Anthony Daniels has STRONG words for fan backlash

Daniels has made no secret of his dissatisfaction with some of the previous films, as has Mark Hamill. But some fans were so upset about The Last Jedi, they threatened to boycott Episode 9. We spoke to Daniels on the red (well, blue, actually) carpet this week and asked him what he really thought of the new film and the fan backlash.

When we spoke to Daniels at the release of his new book I Am C-3PO, he admitted he had not had much to do so far.

He said: “In these new movies I have felt like a table decoration. And that is difficult because I recognise this character is worth so much more.

“But I understand it is a whole film, not a feature about C-3PO. That is just my personal disappointment.

“I get paid whether or not he does anything but it would be nice for him to have a purpose. Even though it is a hell of a drag to dress up every day.”

Daniels beams broadly as he talks about his happiness with the final film.

He said: “Can you imagine if it had been a naff film? I would have been very crestfallen. I’m really chuffed.

“It’s helping me to deal with the possible sadness that it’s over as far as films go. So I’m not feeling that at all. So I’m genuinely excited, finally, frankly to share the thing and not to have to keep secrets any more and to be proud of it and to be able to discuss now tings that people have shared.”

And what about the backlash to the previous film, The Last Jedi, and threats of fan boycotts?

Daniels has a very simple message for them.

He said: “To the fans, people tweet me or you see things on Youtube. You know, people saying, ‘I will never see the last Star Wars film.’

“Oh yes, you will. You can not resist it. And you will love it.”

I certainly did, it remains to be seen what the fandom makes over it as it opens wide across the globe this weekend…
