Michael Schumacher health latest: F1 legend’s son makes heartbreaking admission

Mick Schumacher is currently competing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship with the Theodore Racing and is affiliated to the Ferrari Driver Academy. His famous father Michael drove for Ferrari for 10 years and is the most successful driver to ever get behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car, winning five of his seven world titles in successive years from 2000-2004. At just 20-years old, Mick is only starting out in motor racing and from 20 starts in the most recent season, he finished in the top-10 on eight occasions, while also claiming a maiden win in Hungary earlier this year.

The young starlet was recently driving laps in Ferrari’s F8 Tributo at Fiorano Circuit in Italy, which is a private racetrack owned by the team for development and testing purposes.

But it was also the same track his father Michael clocked more than 50,000 miles each year in his quest to dominate the sport of motor racing.

Mick’s earliest memories of the test circuit are of thrashing a 50cc motorcycle around the grounds while his father went after yet another quick lap time.

Speaking at the track, he told Germany’s Motorsport-Magazin with a grin: “It’s amusing.

“We’re sitting where I used to watch my father driving around, and today I’m driving a Ferrari road car.

“The last time I was here, I rode my motocross bike. That’s my memory of Fiorano.”

Mick added several photographs show his first visit were as a toddler, and continued: “I’ve seen photos of myself in thick jackets, suggesting they were taken during winter testing.”

The 20-year-old confessed to dreaming of driving a Ferrari as a youngster, but the 458 Italia model in particular, which was developed with input from his famous father.

He beamed: “I sense my father’s DNA in every Ferrari, and that makes me extremely proud.”

Mick was also asked if he realises how revered the Schumacher name is in F1 and in particular, in Germany, and whether he feels any added pressure.

But he replied: “No, I mean… I’m Mick. And I love this sport. That to me is the most important thing.”

Earlier this year, Mick described how private life is “very important” to him – just like for his famous motor racing father – but insisted he also wants to make his “own mistakes”.

He told German daily newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung: “Private life is also very important to me.

“To keep the private really private, something that my father is very good at, it always had priority for him.”

But despite the obvious close bond he shares with his famous father, Mick is also keen to go his own way at certain times during his career.

He said: “I think it’s important to make your own mistakes.

“But if, in some situations, I already know how to react and avoid big mistakes, that’s better, of course.

“I think there’s a lot to learn from him for me. We have a similar disposition.”

Michael Schumacher sustained a traumatic brain injury following a tragic skiing accident in December 2013, when he hit his head on a rock on the French Alps.

The motor racing legend has been largely bed-bound since the accident, with statement and updates on his health few and far between.

Family members and close friends have released occasional corrections on Schumacher’s conditions, preferring to keep his privacy guarded.

The most recent update on his health was provided by Scumacher’s former boss at Ferrari Jean Todt.

He told Radio Monte-Carlo: “I’m always careful with such statements, but it’s true.”

“I saw the race together with Michael Schumacher at his home in Switzerland.

“Michael is in the best hands and is well looked after in his house.

“He does not give up and keeps fighting.”
