Dominic Thiem manager explains how decision would spark 'war' with Roger Federer

Dominic Thiem’s manager Herwig Straka has revealed trying to move the Davis Cup to the same week as the Laver Cup would create “war” with Roger Federer. The Davis Cup underwent a huge revamp for this year’s competition, turning into a week-long finals where 18 nations battled it out for the coveted trophy.

While the first few days proved difficult to attract crowds, by the semi-final stage fans were packed inside the arena as Rafael Nadal’s Spain went on to win the tournament.

But throughout the week there was a clear indication that those involved in creating the new format wanted it moved to prime place in the calendar.

That is largely due to the fact the inaugural ATP Cup will take place just six weeks after the end of the Davis Cup.

Having two major team events in such close proximity on the tennis calendar has been raised as a concern by some players and those involved in both events.

That has led to suggestions of the two tournaments potentially merging and taking place in September after the US Open – the same slot as the Laver Cup.

The Ryder Cup-style tournament has proved to be a success in the three years it has been running and Federer is not keen to lose his prime place in the calendar.

And Straka, who is also a tournament director for the Vienna Open, concedes the ATP will have to settle with another solution to avoid a conflict with Federer.

“There are weeks when the ITF is privileged,” he told Tennisnet.
