Trump news: Could President be impeached? How will Senate impeachment trial work?

The Senate has “the sole power to try all impeachmentsā€¯, and during the trial, both parties produce evidence, witnesses and arguments for impeaching the President.

During the trial, Senators can ask both witnesses and counsellors questions, but only once they have submitted them to the presiding judge, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.

The judge ensures the trial complies by rules set beforehand, to be decided by Mitch McConnell, the majority leader in the Senate.

He recently announced he would structure the trial with coordination from the White House counsel, which will represent Donald Trump in the impeachment trial.

Mr McConnell told Fox News: “Everything I do during this, I’m coordinating with the White House counsel. There will be no difference between the president’s position and our position as to how to handle this to the extent that we can.”
