Australian firefighters saw the blaze burst out of control as authorities attempted to contain the enormous fire using a method called back-burning.
The mega blaze, also known as the Gospers Mountain fire, has encroached further across the city’s north-west and south-west.
The accident occurred around 155 miles (250km) northwest of Sydney, where firefighters were trying to stop a blaze of some 378,000 hectares (934,000 acres) reaching communities by employing pre-emptive controlled burning.
The flames ripped across the region moving into the Blue Mountains, one of the popular tourist areas west of Sydney.
