Ahead of the finale, Watchmen fans are curious to know if the dystopian series will return for a second season.

Unfortunately, HBO has not yet confirmed whether Watchmen will return.

However, the series has received huge praise from critics and viewers across the world and high ratings, including 97% on popular review site, Rotten Tomatoes, so things are looking promising.

On the other hand, Watchmen could very easily be a one-off miniseries and hopes of a second series will depend largely on how the finale ends tonight.

Watchmen is based on the come book series of the same name and so far, the TV adaption in on track to tell the complete story in one season.

Watchmen creator Damon Lindelof has also spoken of his vision for Watchmen and confirmed to LADbible, that tonight’s finale will not end on a cliffhanger.

He said: “It was designed to be a complete story much in the vein of shows like Fargo or True Detective, with an understanding that there are many Watchmen stories to tell, but there’s not a big cliffhanger in the final episode.

“I think the majority of the mysteries—at least the ones that are central to the stories that we tell—are resolved by the end of the ninth episode.”

Speaking to Collider, Lindelof explained that he and writers had channelled everything into the show’s first season.

He said: “For me, I have to anticipate the question but I really wasn’t thinking about season two as I was making season one.

“So it’s basically like every good idea that we have that’s worthwhile is going into this season, and I don’t want it to feel like we’ll pay that off later or ‘don’t worry about that one’.

“Every story we’re telling, let’s pack it into these nine episodes.”

Lindelof also explained that if he does not carry the show forward for a second season someone else could take over the series.

He said: “So my feeling is, obviously Watchmen is not mine. That’s what’s beautiful about it. And someone else can take the reins in the way that, for comic book fans, of which I consider myself one first and foremost, the idea that Alan Moore himself came to Swamp Thing in the early 1980s and he basically completely and totally reinvented that character, but that character was not his creation.

He added: “If I had the right idea, I’d certainly be open to it. But I haven’t had that idea yet.”

If Watchmen does receive the green light from HBO, the earliest fans can expect the new series is in October 2021.
