Jurgen Klopp signs new Liverpool deal with interesting Steven Gerrard coincidence

Jurgen Klopp has signed a new Liverpool contract keeping him at Anfield until 2024. The new deal ties the German tactician to the club for a further four-and-a-half years and is welcome news as the Reds embark on a fierce festive fixture schedule.

Klopp, who joined Liverpool in October 2015 and guided his side to the Champions League last season, appeared delighted after signing above the dotted line.

“For me personally this is a statement of intent, one which is built on my knowledge of what we as a partnership have achieved so far and what is still there for us to achieve,” he said.

“When I see the development of the club and the collaborative work that continues to take place, I feel my contribution can only grow.

“People see what happens on the pitch as a measure of our progress and although it is the best measure, it’s not the only measure.

He spoke highly of his aides, saying: “It was so important to me that my staff also agreed these new deals with the club. Without them being prepared to make the same commitment, quite frankly I would not have been able to do this.

“I am blessed to be surrounded by so many amazing staff; honestly, I feel the luckiest manager in the world in this regard.

“Peter and Pep have contributed just as much as I have to the development of this team and although as the manager, many may see me as the face of the club, their input and expertise is invaluable to what we’re looking to achieve.”

The news of Klopp’s extension came just 90 minutes after it was confirmed Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard had signed a new deal with Rangers until 2024.

Gerrard has been intrinsically linked to the top job at Anfield ever since entering the management game at Ibrox at the start of last season.

The former midfielder has openly admitted it would be his dream job to manage Liverpool, making the expiration of both his and Klopp’s new contracts timely.

But Rangers can be assured they have the full attention of Gerrard for the coming years at least, with the wily Merseysider intent on propelling Rangers back to the summit of Scottish football.

“When [chairman] Dave King approached me about the possibility of extending my contract with Rangers, it was a very easy decision to make because I’m very happy and feel that we are building something special together at the Club,” Gerrard said.

“I’d like to thank the Board for the backing they have given me already in my time at the Club and also most importantly, the Rangers fans who have given me and the team such tremendous backing both this season and last.”
