Jeremy Corbyn saw his electoral gamble crash as the Labour Party lost 42 seats and Boris Johnson secured a strong majority to deliver his Brexit plan through Parliament. The Labour leader announced he will stand down in the aftermath of the overwhelming defeat, triggering discussions on who among Labour MPs would be best to replace Mr Corbyn. Asked about who he could envision taking over, Lord Mann told Good Morning Britain: “It will be a woman because the best candidates are women.
“The best two candidates are Jess Phillips and Angela Rayner.”
However, host Susanna Reid pointed out Ms Rayner could suffer in a leadership race because of her close association with Mr Corbyn.
Lord Mann responded: “That’s going to be her weakness, Jess Phillips isn’t.
“They are the two candidates who could persuade people in my area.”

Lord Mann, who quit the Commons earlier this year to take on a seat in the House of Lords, also ruled out Labour grandee Yvette Cooper.
Former Labour adviser Ayesha Hazarika agreed Ms Cooper “has had her time,” and echoed Lord Mann’s views over Jess Phillips potentially leading the Labour Party after Jeremy Corbyn.
Ms Hazarika said: “She has had her time. I think Jess Phillips is a real rising star, somebody who has such huge appeal.
“She has got that charisma about her but she’s a big boogie figure for a lot of Corbynistas in the party.”
