Outlander fans will remember that Ross (played by Scott Kyle) played a frequent role in season two of the Starz show just ahead of the brutal battle of Culloden. The star has since made his exit. However, despite not being the biggest character, his appearance did make an impact, as the star’s refusal to bulk up and embrace the typical tough highlander look made him stand out.
Now, the Outlander star has opened up about his character’s backstory, and why it made sense for Ross to carry an extra few pounds.
Speaking to absolutemusicchat.com, Scott revealed, he had a backstory for Ross in his head when playing the role.
Moreover, he related the character to his own life.
He explained: “Yeah, I think you always go to home, what I mean by that is I think you always dig deep in yourself.

“Ross didn’t have any kids, I thought, ‘Me and Karen don’t have any kids (yet) so I can imagine myself in Ross’s shoes.
“You’re going to war, you’re worried about dying, but at least you don’t have any kids.”
The actor went on to reveal that his job of a blacksmith would have made him wealthy, meaning it was likely he would be carrying extra weight.
He added: “He’s a blacksmith, back in those days a blacksmith would have been a really good job, he would have been poor because of the times but he had a business, so he had a few quid.
“If I did that, maybe he would stand out, so when the camera pans across all these big, hairy Highlanders there’s this young lad and you’re going, ‘What the hell is he doing there?’ I think that’s what happened when people started saying, ‘We’ve got to save Ross, make sure he’s okay, see him home safe.’”
Meanwhile, Scott also spoke out about his time on set, revealing how his dodgy lifting left one of his co-stars feeling a little worse for wear.
Outlander fans will remember Kincaid as a young man from Lallybroch who joined Jaime Fraser (Sam Heughan) in fighting for Charles Stuart.
Sadly he lost his life after receiving fatal injuries as a result of the pact he made with Ross.
He was carried in the arms of Ross who is devastated by the death of his comrade.
Ross began: “began: “This is hilarious!
“I have to carry Gregor’s dead body in in my arms – that’s how they described it in the script – some of the cast thought I was a fireman, because of the way the script said I needed to carry him.
However, being thrown about didn’t fair too well with Gregor, who fainted as a result.
He added: “About the 8th or 9th time I bring the Gregor in, I stand him up, look at him and he looks a bit away with it and he had to sit down – he fainted.”
