Jose Mourinho hits out at question and takes credit for Manchester United’s best player

Jose Mourinho believes previous decisions regarding young players has been warranted though the Tottenham boss remains keen to utilise his current academy. Mourinho has regularly chosen experienced players over younger pros at previous clubs though has given a number of rookie stars their big chance.

That includes Manchester United star Scott McTominay with Mourinho giving the Scottish midfielder his Premier League debut off the bench against Arsenal in 2017.

But the Spurs boss, who only took over in north London last month, believes his treatment has been correct.

“Yes it’s very important, Scott McTominay is only the best player at Manchester United,” Mourinho said.

“Raphael Varane is one of the best players in the world, yes, it’s fair criticism.”

Mourinho has lost just once since taking over at Tottenham, being beaten by United at Old Trafford last week.

Tottenham may struggle to make an impact in the transfer window next month with repayments still to be made on the new stadium.

Though Mourinho is happy to work with what he’s already got at the club.

He said: “It’s a privilege when a manager goes to a club and feels that happiness in relation to the squad that he’s going to have.

“The problem is that sometimes you get into clubs where the work that is below you is not good enough to produce these players so I look to our history and you see that the academy is always giving the talents that the first team needs.

“And, of course, I also look forward to work with that profile.”

Tottenham travel to Bayern Munich tonight in their final Champions League group match.
