Ivanka Trump: How First Daughter is ‘in charge in marriage to Jared Kushner’

Both Ivanka and Jared are senior advisers to US President Donald Trump, for womens’ issues and strategic planning respectively. Her unprecedented position in her father’s administration has led to Ivanka being dubbed the First Daughter, a title she reportedly likes. While Jared had an important role in his father’s real estate business Kushner Companies before he even met Ivanka, he would likely never have made it into the Oval Office if it were not for his wife.

Not only does Jared owe his position to Ivanka, but according to 2019 book ‘Kushner Inc’, she is more on top of things in their personal life too.

One person who knew the couple hinted that she was “in charge”, telling author Vicky Ward: “He doesn’t have a thought she didn’t give him.”

According to Ms Ward, Ivanka often gives Jared the benefit of her opinion on all sorts of issues, including public relations.

She wrote: “At least one publicist said that Ivanka would weigh in on the smallest of details, things that would not occur to most people.

“For example, Ivanka told the publicist Jared should not turn down interviews with the words ‘Jared Kushner declined to comment,’ instead choosing some more elegant way of saying the same thing.”

The publicist said: “I just felt like I was being handled in such an icky way.”

Ms Ward went on to claim that Ivanka “seemed to control the marital relationship”, but that she also played the role of a devoted Orthodox Jewish wife.

Ivanka converted to Judaism before marrying Jared, who is from a traditional Orthodox Jewish family.

At first, Jared’s parents Charlie and Seryl Kushner were apparently horrified at the match and refused to even meet Ivanka.

They were reportedly aghast at the idea that their son might marry someone outside the faith.

In 2008, the couple actually split up for a couple of months, in part because of the Kushner family’s objections.

However, they were reunited on a boating holiday with Wendi Deng Murdoch and Ivanka decided to convert.

According to a family friend Bob Sommer, Jared’s father Charlie Kushner made sure the conversion was as challenging as possible in order to test Ivanka devotion.

He told Ms Ward: “This wasn’t like, ‘Talk to a rabbi, read a couple of paragraphs. It was hard, and it was on Charlie’s terms.”

However, she passed with flying colours and they were soon “effusive” about her.

Ivanka played the role well and the pair of them mingled with some of the most influential people in New York, often those a lot older than them who were influential in their industry.

For her husband’s 35th birthday she put together a dinner at the top of the Gramercy Park Hotel for dozens of guests, including Hugh Jackman, Joel Klien, Kevin Ryan, Mike Fascitelli, and Michael Ovitz.

One guest joked that the median age was 70, adding that “it wasn’t a fun party”.

Ivanka spent many weekends in New Jersey with her in-laws, but even more at her father’s gold club in Bedminster.

Donald Trump, a Presbytarian, was allegedly “discombobulated” by his daughter’s conversion.

He found the wedding party a “shock” too – Ivanka’s dress covered her shoulders in keeping with traditional conservative Jewish tradition, women were given shawls when they arrived and the sexes were asked to dance separately several times during the night.

He would later tell his political aide Sam Nunberg: “Why should my daughter convert to marry anyone?”

While he apparently mocked Jared, by comparing him unfavourably to NFL star Tom Brady, Mr Trump has also given his son-in-law ample professional opportunities.

He was deeply involved in the 2016 presidential campaign and now plays a significant party in government.
