Black Widow trailer: Where is Black Widow set? Where is it in the MCU timeline?

Scarlett Johansson is back in her Marvel uniform of skin-tight leather as Natasha Romanoff, AKA Black Widow. The actor will be joined by Hollywood heavyweights such as Rachel Weisz, Florence Pugh and David Harbour to tell Black Widow’s origins story. But when is the film set, and where will the action take place?

When is Black Widow set?

Black Widow is set after the events of Captain America: Civil War.

As many fans will remember, Civil War showed the Avengers struggling to come together over the regulation of the team.

In the end, Tony Stark assembled a team to fight, with Natasha, T’Challa, James Rhodes, Vision and Peter Parker attempting to work with them and capture the other Avengers who are trying to escape regulation and help Bucky Barnes, who at that time had been brainwashed to be a cold-blooded killer.

In the end, the fight turns incredibly nasty and Natasha eventually allows Steve Rogers and his friend Bucky to escape, while the rest of Rogers’ team languish in prison.

After the devastation of her new family, SHIELD and the Avengers, Natasha goes into exile and is not seen again until Avengers: Infinity War, where she has reconnected with the fugitive Steve Rogers.

This new film is, therefore, set in between these two films, meaning it is set in 2016.

However, it is clear this film will also give a glimpse into the past life of Natasha, and she will not just be staying in the present day.

In the new trailer, there is a scene where Natasha is standing in a ballet training room and another where a younger Natasha is shooting in what looks like it is the same room.

If this relates to her back story as told in the comics, it may be the agency which trained Natasha has planted memories in her head to try to falsify her past, when in actual fact she was being trained in the Red Room to be a ruthless assassin.

It is likely this film will jump between timelines and fans can only speculate as to what the mid-credit and post-credit scenes will speak of.

Hopefully, it will give even more insight into how Black Widow became who she was – and how the MCU will continue now we have left her behind.

This certainly implies the film will be taking place in Russia, but fans will also remember Natasha’s discussions with Hawkeye, where they talked about “that time in Budapest.”

There is likely to be a number of flashbacks in this film, as well as potential flash forwards, as is clear in the trailer.

We even see Black Widow flying in the incredible Avengers spacecraft seen in The Avengers, so hopefully fans will finally get to find out what happened in Budapest.

Black Widow is in cinemas on May 1, 2020
