What Freddie Ljungberg said when asked if he wants the Arsenal job on a permanent basis

Freddie Ljungberg is not worrying about taking permanent charge of Arsenal having been named caretaker manager of the club. The Swede has taken the reins after Unai Emery was sacked by the Gunners on Friday. Ljungberg’s first game will see Arsenal travel to Norwich on Sunday.

And as he prepares for his first match, the former midfielder insists that is all he is focused on having been asked if he wants the job on a permanent basis.

Ljungberg told Sky Sports: “For me, it’s about the team and the club.

“I try to concentrate for the future, the game tomorrow, we’ll try to win that, maybe there’s a few other games, we’ll see but for me, that’s what I look at, other stuff is totally irrelevant.”

Ljungberg’s first task will be to try to get Arsenal back to winning ways.

Emery was sacked after the Gunners went seven matches in all competitions without tasting victory.

The Spaniard’s last game in charge was a 2-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League, though reports suggest the decision to sack him was made ahead of that game.

Emery was quick to send a classy message to Arsenal fans following his dismissal on Friday morning.

He said: “It has been an honour to be the Arsenal head coach. To all the fans, I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for helping me to understand and feel the greatness of Arsenal.

“To all of you who have supported us from every corner of the globe, all of you who have come to the Emirates, all of you who have waited in the rain and cold just to greet me after a game. I want to tell all of you that I have worked with passion, with commitment and with effort.

“I would have liked nothing more than to have achieved better results for you. I also want to send a message of gratitude to all Arsenal employees for the way they have treated me.

“The greatness of Arsenal is in every director, executive, employee, assistant and volunteer.”
