EU crisis: Malta PM Muscat loses critical confidence vote as own cabinet demands he resign

Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has been dealt a hammer blow to his leadership after losing a confidence vote. More than half of Mr Muscat’s cabinet called on him to resign, according to reports.

Mr Muscat is expected to step down from his role imminently, according to local media.

His decision was precipitated by the political and legal crisis brought about by the investigation into the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, the Times of Malta reported on Friday.

Sky News’ Europe Correspondent Adam Parsons wrote: “I understand Maltese PM Joseph Muscat has lost a vote of confidence within his cabinet. More than half called on him to resign”.

Authorities have questioned Muscat’s right-hand man Keith Schembri this week in their investigation into the murder of Caruana Galizia, who was blown up by a car bomb in 2017.

Her family demanded on Friday that Muscat resign, after Schembri was set free overnight.

Schembri, who resigned this week as Muscat’s chief of staff, denies wrongdoing.
