From Vienna to Milan, opera manager Meyer considers #MeToo

The incoming general manager of Milan’s famed Teatro alla Scala opera house discusses the European reaction to allegations of sexual harassment against Placido Domingo

Frenchman Dominique Meyer — who over the coming months will be simultaneously guiding two of Europe’s most important opera houses — is defending the European response to sexual harassment allegations against Placido Domingo.

Meyer will leave the Vienna State Opera officially in March to take over full time as general manager of Milan’s La Scala. Domingo played to long applause recently in Vienna and will sing a 50th anniversary concert at La Scala on Dec. 15.

Meyer told The Associated Press in an interview that there was no question of canceling the dates without any legal paper trail.

The first opera house manager on either side of the Atlantic to discuss the fallout publicly, Meyer said that in Europe, “I have the impression that we are living in countries where there are laws, rules, police, judges, processes.”
