The First Lady, and wife of US President Donald Trump, gave the speech as part of her BeBest campaign warning young people against drug use. Audiences booed Melania as she came on to stage and also when she left. Many students spoke through the entirety of her five-minute speech.
Footage of the First Lady’s heckling was posted online where many of her critics revelled in the news.
One person Tweeted how it was the “funniest moment of the week!”.
Soon afterwards, #MelaniaGotBooed began trending.
One Twitter user wrote: “#MelaniaGotBooed and she earned every minute of it. Phony. No substance.”
Carol Kelly said: “Out she comes when things get heated for the president.
“Bless her heart, she doesn’t get that she’s being used.”
Many felt Melania’s booing stemmed from previous comments from Trump, who called Baltimore “a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess” where “no human being would want to live”.
Earlier this week Melania welcomed the arrival of the White House Christmas Tree.
Frances Richardson wrote on Twitter: “Shouldn’t she be busy concocting some new psychotic, dysfunctional, grim Christmas display?”
Despite the onslaught of criticism, many came out in defence of Melania.
Melissa Richard said Trump is to blame, not his wife.
She wrote on Twitter: “She’s not the one that is Corrupt! Her husband is.
“It’s not her ruining everything it’s her husband.
Why should she pay the price for what he does.”
Michael wrote on Twitter: “Thank you for continually demonstrating class and poise in the face of those who disagree or even slander you.”
Diana Jamieson posted to Melania: “Thank you! I am so sorry for the terrible treatment you received. So sad!”
