Albania earthquake latest: Is Albania on the Ring of Fire? Does it get a lot of quakes?

As you can see from the map above, Albania is close to the tectonic plate line which runs under Italy, making the region prone to tremors.

A magnitude-5.6 earthquake shook the country on September 21, damaging about 500 houses and destroying some.

The defence ministry said Tuesday’s quake was the most powerful quake in Albania in the last 30 years.

The Balkan country is the poorest in Europe, with an average income of less than a third of the European Union average, according to Eurostat data.
