The magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck 19 miles (30km) west of the capital Tirana shortly before 4am local time (3am GMT) at a shallow depth of six miles (10km), the US Geological Survey reported. The quake was felt across the Balkans and in the southern Italian region of Puglia, and was followed by a strong aftershock three hours later.
Has a tsunami warning been issued?
Currently, no tsunami warning has been issued after the earthquake.
Albania is a ‘medium’ hazard level for tsunamis according to thinkhazard.org.
The website, run by the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery, states “there is more than a 10 percent chance of a potentially-damaging tsunami occurring in the next 50 years”.
However, as yet, the authorities have not issued any tsunami warnings for the region.
