Novak Djokovic eyes Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal meeting over Davis Cup and ATP Cup

Novak Djokovic says he is hopeful of having talks with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal over merging the Davis Cup and ATP Cup.

On Sunday, Spain were crowned Davis Cup champions after beating Canada in the final.

This year’s edition of the tournament was the first under the leadership of Gerard Pique and his investment group Kosmos and ITF.

Despite some teething problems, the tournament was largely a success and next year’s event is also set to be held in Madrid, Spain.

But in around six weeks, the inaugural ATP Cup will be played across three cities in Australia with 24 nations involved.

Having two major team events in such a short space of time has been raised as a concern and led for calls to merge the Davis Cup and ATP Cup together, potentially to be played in September.

But moving it to September would put it in direct competition with another team competition – the Laver Cup.

The Laver Cup, founded by Roger Federer, has been warmly received in its three editions and Federer is not keen for it to lose his prime place in the calendar.

Djokovic feels something has to change and is willing to have talks with Federer and Nadal to reach a compromise.

He told reporters: “I did not speak with Rafa and Roger about this because the decision was made already some time ago about, you know, ITF and Kosmos deciding that they’re going to change the format.

“ATP was developing their own team cup that is happening in January. So it was kind of already very clear what the situation is.

“But I think, you know, in Australia we will see how the ATP Cup will turn out to be. I think it’s going to be success anyway because there’s a lot of top players going to be there because it is prior to Australian Open.

“I think it’s time anyway for, first of all, the heads of ATP and ITF to talk about this.

“I am going to speak with Roger and Rafa and ask their opinions, of course. We are also part of the council, the three of us. But we don’t make decisions.

“People I think have the wrong idea that we three make all the calls in tennis, which is not true.

“Of course, our opinions are valued, but the way the structure is set up, it’s the boards and, of course, different entities that make decisions and the leaders of those entities.”
