Teary Rafael Nadal hails ‘unforgettable’ Davis Cup glory as he thanks Spain crowd

Rafael Nadal thanked the Spanish crowd in Madrid after winning the Davis Cup for his country, against Canada.

Nadal hailed an “unforgettable” journey in the competition, as he beat Denis Shapovalov in the second rubber of the Davis Cup final.

The Spaniard beat the Canadian 6-3, 7-6 to win Spain’s first Davis Cup since 2011.

Speaking after the match, Nadal said he couldn’t thank the crowd enough for their support.

“It’s been an amazing week. The father of Roberto passed away, Marcel yesterday had a stiff lower back,” said Nadal, after winning the Davis Cup for Spain.

“We called him off. Pablo got injured on the singles, so loads of things happened.

“I could not be happier, honestly. I’ve had some unforgettable moments here in this amazing stadium.

“The crowd was just a joke. I can’t thank them enough; all of them. Our team spirit prevails. We fight hard.
