I’m A Celebrity 2019: Why do they wear red socks? The real reason explained

ITV reality series I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! is ending its first week with the famous faces now fully settled into jungle life. There have already been a few spats and Bushtucker Trials as is standard fare on the show. As per usual, each of the campmates is kitted out in their standard I’m A Celebrity uniform which includes red shorts, a navy T-shirt and red socks to go with their hiking boots.

Why do I’m A Celebrity contestants wear red socks?

In an interview with Women’s Own Magazine last year, Medic Bob who attends to any first aid issues in the show explained the red socks were worn right up to the knee to disguise any bloodstains.

The campmates are likely to be bitten by all manner of the critters on the series as well as leeches which will leave marks of blood on socks.

Medic Bob also shared some other behind-the-scenes secrets on spin-off series Extra Camp, saying: “Most people think of fungus as mushrooms but we have problems with the cast every year – especially women growing fungus on certain body parts [breasts].

“I’ve been instructing them to use the shower and personal hygiene a little bit more often.”

So he told the stars to wash twice a day to in order to prevent any sort of infections.

Medic Bob is on hand throughout the show to make sure the celebrities are safe and healthy, particularly when they have to take on thousands of cockroaches, mealworms, spiders, rats and snakes as part of the challenges.

However, cleanliness in the jungle was made harder by the fact the stars were only allowed to take in three pairs of underwear and the same number of swimwear.

With some stars being in the jungle for up to a month, this isn’t a lot and will require frequent laundry on their part.

The location of the I’m A Celebrity camp

There are some other behind-the-scenes secrets on I’m A Celebrity such as the show actually being on an old banana plantation rather than actually being in the middle of the Australian bush.

The camp is located on Dungay Creek near Queensland’s populous Gold Coast.

While the contestants are in the camp, the presenter and their friends and family will be camped out at Palazzo Versace Hotel.

But the crew of the show will be staying at the Coolangatta holiday resort.

Once the British show has wrapped up filming for a year, the German version of the show and their crew will arrive to film another series.

This set is not just used by UK crews but also Sweden, France, India, Hungary and American versions of the show which shoot on the same set, according to BT.

The constant supply of insects

Each year the show featured hundreds of the thousands of insects and critters for its various challenges.

Unsurprisingly, there is a bug breeding farm on hand to make sure there are plenty of creepy crawlies for the tasks.

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! continues on ITV tonight at 9pm
