Flight secrets: The best time to book a holiday to get the cheapest flights from the UK

Flight costs are set to be slashed in Black Friday and Boxing Day sales – but what can budget-conscious holidaymakers do the rest of the year? To save money on flights away from the sale period, shoppers should book a particular number of days ahead.

Jet2 have taken over many of the former company’s spots, it was revealed this week, with easyJet picking up many more.

By taking over the landing slots at Manchester and Birmingham, Jet2.com has now taken over as the number one airline at both airports, boosting its offering for holidaymakers.

In a statement Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2 and Jet2 Holidays said:“The acquisition of these key UK airport slots will play an important role in supporting our continued growth at Birmingham, London Stansted and Manchester Airports.

“We have been adding more flights and aircraft, resulting in increased capacity, at each of these bases for many years. Today’s announcement is the latest demonstration of our commitment to providing holidaymakers with more choice and flexibility when it comes to flying to sun, city and ski destinations with our award-winning airline.”

Now is the time many holidaymakers are thinking about heading to a Christmas Market, but which is the most cost-effective?

The latest data from the annual Post Office Travel Money Christmas Markets Barometer reveals there is one Christmas Market haven where travellers can get the most for their money.

Having reviewed 13 European cities, it was the Latvian capital Riga that was named the bargain choice for a Christmas shopping trip.

The barometer took into account the cost for to people of a flight, inclusive B&B accommodation, airport transfers, two evening meals with wine, coffee, festive drinks and snacks at the Christmas market.

Riga came out with a barometer total of £497, a reported 1.2 percent cheaper than a year ago.

Meanwhile, it was Vienna that was deemed the most expensive city.

In comparison, visitors to Latvia can enjoy the same type of Christmas getaway for 36 percent cheaper.

However, the barometer also highlighted Prague which came out as the cheapest city “on the ground”.
