What Jose Mourinho told Tottenham players in first meeting at Hotspur Way

Jose Mourinho held a meeting with the Tottenham players at Hotspur Way before taking charge of his first session as Spurs boss, reports claim.

The Special One was confirmed as the man to replace Mauricio Pochettino early on Wednesday morning after 11 months away from the dugout.

One of his first decisions in the Tottenham hot-seat was to delay the team’s morning training session until the afternoon.

That allowed him to settle in to the Enfield-based training centre and meet with his new players beforehand.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Mourinho told the Spurs players that they must all pull together in other to save their season.

Tottenham are currently in 14th place and 11 points adrift of the top four.

However given that they’re just one win away from fifth-placed Sheffield United, there is optimism that Tottenham can turn things around.

Jose Mourinho is also said to have held talks with the likes of Harry Kane, as he looks to convince the dressing room to buy into his Tottenham blueprint.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea boss is keen to win trophies in north London, something Pochettino was unable to do during his five-and-a-half year tenure.

Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness thinks that despite some criticism, Daniel Levy has pulled off a real coup appointing Mourinho.

“He is a guy that has won trophies wherever he has been. I would expect him to do the same at Spurs,” he told Sky Sports.

“Spurs have won three trophies in 28 years. For a big club that’s just not good enough.

“Spurs are genuinely a big football club and they need someone that can turn what is perceived to be attacking, attractive football into maybe a slightly more pragmatic approach that will put some silverware in the boardroom, and I think he is the perfect fit for them.

“He is an angry man, deep inside. He’s a frustrated man, the way it turned out at United. I think Spurs will reap the benefit of that.

“He knew he was going to go back and he was just waiting for the right one. He loves the English game.

“Our football right now is the one everyone wants to watch. The spotlight is on us. He likes to be in the spotlight. He has got a big personality but he truly is a football person.

“I think Spurs are getting the right man at the right time. He feels he has a point to prove to people who doubted him or were critical of him. He will want to ram those words down his critics’ throats.”
