The news of the appointment came just hours after Pochettino was sacked by Tottenham following a poor run of form.

It is Mourinho’s first step back into management since being fired by Manchester United last year.

“I am excited to be joining a club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters,” he said.

“The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me.

“Working with these players is what has attracted me.”

Mourinho signed a deal until 2023, and Daniel Levy expressed his pride in hiring a manager with a record like the Portuguese boss’.

“He has won honours at every club he has coached,” Levy said.

The former United boss has won 25 senior trophies during his time in management, and his will to win is believed to be what convinced Levy to pull the trigger on Pochettino’s time in north London.

In a statement, Levy said: “In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football.

“He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician.

“We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.”

Mourinho’s first game in charge will be this Saturday against West Ham.

He joins the club in a time of turmoil, with first-team players Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen all expected to leave at the end of the season.

Mourinho will come up against his former side, Manchester United, on December 4.
