Novak Djokovic shrugs off injury worries as he joins Serbian team-mates at Davis Cup

Novak Djokovic says he came through practice at the Davis Cup unscathed and is ready to lead Serbia to victory.

Djokovic was in action at the ATP Finals last week and exited the competition after defeat to Roger Federer in the final round-robin match.

During the second set of that match, Djokovic clutched his elbow after losing control of his racket.

Afterward, the 32-year-old revealed he felt a “sharp pain” in his elbow but was hopeful of being fit enough to play at Davis Cup.

Djokovic arrived in Madrid on Sunday and had an open practice session at Caja Magica.

And speaking after the session, Djokovic expressed his happiness at being with his team-mates. again after a two-year absence.

“Obviously I’ve had a great experience this year in the Madrid tournament, I like playing here, I like the conditions,” he said.

“I had an hour something of practice, everything went well.

“Being part of the national team is something that I always valued very much.

“I have not played for the Serbia national team for several years, so I missed the feeling of being with my friends, with my colleagues and the guys that create a great atmosphere.

“We’re going to stay hopefully until the end of the tournament and have success.”

The Davis Cup has undergone an extensive revamp, led by Barcelona star Gerard Pique and his investment group Kosmos.

And Pique wants the likes of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray to feel at home in Madrid.

“I want them to have the best week of their lives,” he said.

“I want Davis Cup to be a party around tennis, not just tennis. We have a deal with Sony and there are going to be different artists performing there that will provide other entertainment which is going to help make Davis Cup unique.

“During that week fans will enjoy more than just tennis, and of course we want them to have a great time in Madrid. They love their sport there.

“They had the Champions League final in the city this year, the World Cup of basketball also. Spain in general is a very sporting country, Madrid is the capital and they are very excited to be hosting the Davis Cup.”
