The Crown season 2 recap: What happened in season 2? 10 things you need to remember

Season two of The Crown dropped in 2017 comprising of 10 episodes spanning 1957 to 1964. The show gave further insight into Queen Elizabeth II (played by Claire Foy) and Prince Philip’s (Matt Smith) relationship as their marriage seemed strained. The second outing also delved into a number of events including the Profumo Affair and the Suez Crisis.

The Crown season 2 recap:

1. The Queen and Prince Philip’s marriage

The Queen and Prince Philip seemed to hit a rocky patch after he went on a tour and the pair were separated.

2. The Duke of Windsor’s scandalous past

Season two of the Netflix hit delved into the Duke of Windsor’s (Alex Jennings) past which revealed he was friends with Adolf Hitler and high-ranking members of the Nazi Party.

He was hoping to return to England out of exile and take on a new role but his hopes were dashed after the damning Windsor File was unearthed and revealed his links to the Third Reich.

5. Princess Margaret marries Antony Armstrong-Jones

Princess Margaret (Vanessa Kirby) and Group Captain Peter Townsend (Ben Miles) moved on from their failed romance after he revealed he was getting married.

In a bid to out-do him, Princess Margaret got together with photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones (Matthew Goode) and the pair were quick engaged and then married.

Antony gave up his long list of lovers for Margaret but it wasnt long before the cracks started to show between the two of them.

6. Prince Philip gets a title

After feeling emasculated by his wife and out-ranked by his own son, Prince Philip demanded a title and respect from the palace courtiers.

In a bid to placate him, he was made a Prince of the United Kingdom and the royal household treated him in a more regal manner befitting his status.

7. JFK’s assassination

The Queen saw the assassination of JFK (Michael C. Hall), which left her shocked to the core after only recently building a rapport with Jackie.

The JFK and Jackie state visit to the UK also had quite an effect on the young monarch.

8. Prince Philip had a traumatic childhood

In flashbacks to his childhood, viewers learnt a young Prince Philip (Finn Elliot) had a troubled upbringing with his mother Princess Alice of Greece and Denmark (Sophie Stone) institutionalised for paranoid schizophrenia.

While his sister Cecile (Leonie Benesch) and her family were killed in a tragic accident after their aircraft crashed at Ostend.

9. Prince Charles was forced to go to Gordonstoun

A young Prince Charles (Julian Baring) was forced to attend the Scottish boarding school Gordonstoun in Scotland where he had a horrific experience and wanted to leave.

His father made him go there despite protests from his mother, who wanted to send him to Eton College.

10. The Profumo Scandal

The Profumo Scandal came towards the end of season two when the married Secretary of State for War was revealed to be having an affair with model Christine Keeler.

Keeler was seeing John Profumo while also having relations with Yevgeni Ivanov, the senior naval attaché at the Soviet Embassy.

This was scandalous given it was during the height of the Cold War with fears National security has been compromised by his illicit interactions with Keeler.

On top of this, in the show a photo emerged of a “mystery man” at a party organised by osteopath Stephen Ward and with Princess Margaret querying whether this figure was the Duke of Edinburgh.

Needless to say, Prince Philip denied being the mystery man and the Queen seemed to let it lie at that.
