Trump lashes out at 'double standards' after ally Roger Stone convicted in court

The 67-year-old veteran Republican political operative was charged earlier this year with obstructing justice, witness tampering and lying to the US House of Representatives Intelligence Committee during its investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Following the verdict at the US District court in Washington, a furious Mr Trump wrote on Twitter: “So they now convict Roger Stone of lying and want to jail him for many years to come.

“Well, what about Crooked Hillary, Comey, Strzok, Page, McCabe, Brennan, Clapper, Shifty Schiff, Ohr & Nellie, Steele & all of the others, including even Mueller himself? Didn’t they lie?

“A double standard like never seen before in the history of our Country?”

Mr Stone is the sixth aide or adviser of the US President to be convicted of charges brought as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.

The 67-year-old denied any wrongdoing and consistently criticised the case against him as politically motivated.

Mr Stone did not take the stand during the trial and his lawyers did not call any witnesses in his defence.

In the trial, witnesses highlighted how Mr Trump’s campaign associates were eager to gather information about emails the US says were hacked by Russia and then provided to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks.

Steve Bannon, who served as the campaign’s chief executive, testified during the trial that Mr Stone had boasted about his ties to WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange, alerting them to pending new batches of damaging emails.

He said campaign officials saw Mr Stone as the “access point” to WikiLeaks.

Throughout the trial, prosecutors used Mr Stone’s own text messages and emails – some of which appeared to contradict his congressional testimony – to lay out their case that he lied to Congress and threatened a witness.

This is a developing news story, more to follow.
