Roger Federer's win over Novak Djokovic is a 'big boost' to Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal will have gained a ‘big boost’ from Roger Federer’s win over Novak Djokovic as he bids to stay in the ATP Finals.

Last night, Federer produced a superb display to beat Djokovic 6-4 6-3.

The victory booked Federer’s place in the semi-finals but also ensured that Djokovic’s exit meant Nadal would be the year-end No 1 for the fifth time.

It caps a brilliant year for the Spaniard, who has won two Grand Slam titles and two Masters 1000 events.

Nadal plays Stefanos Tsitsipas this afternoon knowing that he must win to give himself a chance of reaching the last four.

If the Spaniard does win, he must then hope Daniil Medvedev beats Alexander Zverev this evening.

Nadal had a shaky start to the tournament, losing to Zverev on Monday but he fought back from 5-1 down and saved a match point to defeat Medvedev on Wednesday to keep his title hopes alive.

And speaking on Tennis Channel, Federer’s former coach Paul Annacone said Nadal will be able to play with a bit more freedom against Tsitsipas thanks to the No 1 battle being resolved.

“One of the things I noticed, it was one of the first times I’ve seen Rafa a little bit dejected towards the end of that third set,” he said.

“But he got dejected for all of about 36 seconds and you saw the true will of Rafa Nadal.

“I think it will give him a huge boost that No 1 is taken care of. He doesn’t even have to think about that.

“So [he can] just go out, play and fight. That’s what he loves to do.

“I would be surprised if he doesn’t play a good match after the big win [over Medevedev].”

After his win on Thursday, Federer paid tribute to Nadal for his performances over the year.

He said: “Rafa has had an unreal of a stretch, as well. Both guys have had great years.

“I’m happy I was able to beat both this year, but they both deserve to be ranked higher than me this year.”
