Bastille: Dan Smith's band has an unlucky history with the John Lewis Christmas advert

Bastille have a tangental history with the John Lewis Christmas advert, having suffered a blow at the hands of Lily Allen’s rendition of Somewhere Only We Know back in 2013. At the time, Dan Smith’s Bastille and Gary Barlow were leading the UK singles chart mid-week. However, thanks to Allen’s spectacularly successful cover, Bastille missed out on the chance to get their first ever number one with their hit Of The Night.

Somewhere Only We Know, which Allen covered for the John Lewis Christmas advert that year, beat Of The Night to the top spot by just 660 copies, becoming her third number one single.

So, years before he got the gig singing the track for the famous John Lewis Christmas advert, Smith was thwarted by it in a chart face-off.

Since then, Bastille still haven’t managed to clinch that first place in the UK Single’s Chart.

It seems Smith’s luck when it comes to the John Lewis advert is about to change, however, as he’s already looking good for a number one hit with Can’t Fight This Feeling.
