Eventually, Jones was able to get a summary of the 7,000 page report released into the world, where many journalists took great pains to reveal some of the horrendous acts performed by CIA agents.
Burns did, however, make sure to mention how the EIT programme was not sanctioned by the entire CIA, and many spoke out against it.
He added: “The CIA is not monolithic – not everybody at the CIA supported this programme and one of the things those in the film showed, and in Dan’s experience, was there were people at the agency who were waving their hands, writing emails saying to the supervisors that this programme is not acceptable and I do not want to be part of it.
‘It’s very important to realise that even within the agency there was a considerable amount of dissent over this.”
