Disney+ update: BIG news for Star Wars fans as streaming service launches

Disney+ launched in the US this morning and will exclusively boast every single Star Wars movie to date, according to Business Insider. Not only will the whole back catalogue be available, they’ve all been remastered in 4K with Dolby Vision and Atmos support, Engadget report. This marks the first time the original trilogy and prequels have been been released in 4K.

The first two trilogies haven’t been remastered since 2011, when they were released on Blu-ray, so the retouching is bound to have an impact.

Rumours of 4K remasters of the original trilogy surfaced this summer, prompting speculation they were going to be released as part of a box set.

This might still happen, but until then they’re exclusive to Disney+.

It’s huge news for several of the films which have never been available in 4K, although The Last Jedi and Solo: A Star Wars Story are already on in 4K on Blu-ray.

The streaming service features releases from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic.

When it comes to MCU movies, there’s an abundance on offer for subscribers, 16 of the 23, in fact.

These include: Black Panther, the first and second Captain America films, Doctor Strange, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Infinity War and Endgame and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and 2.

And it’s not just Star Wars fans who will be pleased with what’s on offer on Disney+ as it’s already been revealed Avengers: Endgame’s mysterious deleted scene features in the platform’s version.

The emotional scene shows Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) in the metaphysical Way Station moments after snapping his fingers wearing his Infinity Gauntlet in order to defeat Thanos (Josh Brolin).

There, he meets a future version of his daughter Morgan Stark (Katherine Langford).

The poignant scene was cut from the theatrical release, with the Russo brothers telling Happy Sad Confused podcast it was too complicated for test audiences early on in the process.

It mirrors the end of Avengers: Infinity War when Thanos was seen encountering a young version of his daughter Gamora (Ariana Greenblatt) in the dreamlike realm after The Snap.

Disney+ launched in the US, Canada and Netherlands today and will launch in the UK March 31 2020.
