Stella McCartney slammed for promoting coat Meghan Markle wore on Remembrance Sunday

Stella McCartney has come under fire for advertising her brand’s coat on a now deleted social media post after Meghan Markle wore the item to a Remembrance Sunday service. Many users claimed that it was disrespectful for the designer to use the sombre occasion the Duchess of Sussex attended to plug a product.

The belted wool Stella McCartney coat goes for £1,545 and Meghan paired the elegant piece with a wide brimmed hat on yesterday at the Cenotaph.

While the Duchess of Sussex did indeed look elegant, many Instagram users have claimed it is not appropriate for Stella’s brand to promote the item in connection with Remembrance Sunday.

The post showed a snap of Meghan wearing the item along with the caption: “So honoured to have HRH Duchess of Sussex in our Autumn ’19 coat at Remembrance Day service. x Stella.”

One of Stella’s some 6.2 million followers hit out with: “Are you really doing a #AD on a day that’s all about remembering the dead? How embarrassing.”

Meghan wore the coat as she joined other members of the royal family at the Cenotaph war memorial in London to pay respects to those lost in conflict.

The Duchess of Sussex stood on a balcony with the Countess of Wessex and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence.

Stella McCartney, daughter of Sir Paul McCartney and the late Linda McCartney, has amassed an estimated £58 million fortune from her fashion empire.

She recently teamed up with members of Extinction Rebellion to promote her fashions.

She cast Extinction Rebellion members Deya Ward, Ruby Munslow and Tori Tsui to model her latest fashion line.

Stella has been known as an environmental activist for years.

Last year she said: “90 per cent of the environmental issues that are mentioned in the fashion industry are based around marketing.

“They’re not heartfelt. They’re not really genuine.”
