Russia develops hypersonic weapons ‘no one else owns’ in terrifying threat to world peace

President Vladimir Putin showered praise on Russia’s development of the state-of-the-art weapons that the US is now battling overtime to match. In a ceremony addressing the nation and its arsenal of weaponry at the Grand Kremlin Palace he said workers who accomplished the production of the weapons are “critical to the state”. He said the weapons work “to reliably protect Russia and our fellow citizens from external and domestic threats, to clearly anticipate potential risks and challenges and to improve their performance gradually and consistently”.

He added: “Your key priority is the development of the Russian Armed Force.

“Our army and navy have proved their high readiness, yet we intend to build up our defence capability and to deploy hypersonic, laser and other cutting-edge weapons which no other country has.”

He added: “However, this is not a reason for threatening anyone. On the contrary, we are ready to do our best to promote the disarmament process with the help of these novel weapons, which have been created exclusively to guarantee our security in the face of growing threats to our country.”

One of the missiles Mr Putin made reference to is the Poseidon underwater torpedo drone, 9M730 Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile and Peresvet laser system.

China – a close ally of Russia – is also reported to be developing advanced weapons.

Pentagon spokesman Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Robert Carver said: “While the United States has been the world leader in hypersonic system research for many decades, we did not choose to weaponise hypersonic technology.”

He added: “Those who sought to be our adversaries have decided to weaponise it, which has created a war-fighting asymmetry that we must address.

“The Department of Defence leads in hypersonic research, and fielding hypersonic weapons is our highest technical research and engineering priority.

The news comes after it was claimed just today that President Putin is using his growing influence throughout the world to garner more power for the Russian state – and his weapons deals, political allegiances and areas of influence in Europe are expanding, sparking fears of an Iron Curtain revival.

His most recent power play saw Pantsir-S missile systems touchdown in Serbia as the Russian President strengthens ties with the autocratic administration in Belgrade headed by President Aleksandar Vucic.

He has overseen monstrous arms deals with the Balkan state, supplying various weapons for both ground and air combat, including fighter jets, attack helicopters and battle tanks.

The deal comes despite warnings from US President Donald Trump’s administration that Washington would impose crippling sanctions on Serbia should they decide to invest in the deadly weaponry.

Serbia is not the only country in the Balkan region feeling the Kremlin’s

Paul Stronski highlights in his paper ‘Russia’s game in the Balkans’ that the Kremlin’s influence in the Wester Balkans is geared towards undermining the countries’ hopes of joining the European Union and NATO.

This is done by contributing to instability in the region making the nations less likely to be accepted into Western alliances as security fears rise.
